Distribution of Literary Communities in Indonesia, June 2025: Central Java Has the Most

The Indonesian Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) recorded 886 language/literature communities in Indonesia as of June 26, 2025. These recorded communities range from community reading gardens (TBM) to those with specific interests.

For example, in Sewon District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, there are communities such as Indonesia Boekoe, Jogja Book Reading Club, and Widuri Pandan TBM.

Central Java is recorded as the province with the highest number of language/literature communities in Indonesia. This is followed by Yogyakarta Special Region, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and West Java.

The following provinces are in the top 10 with the highest number of language/literature communities in Indonesia as of June 26, 2025:

1. Central Java: 146 communities
2. Yogyakarta Special Region: 105 communities
3. South Sulawesi and North Sulawesi: 67 communities each
4. West Java: 51 communities
5. North Sumatra: 43 communities
6. Southeast Sulawesi: 41 communities
7. Banten: 40 communities
8. West Kalimantan: 37 communities
9. South Sumatra and East Java: 25 communities each
10. Bali: 22 communities

Kemendikdasmen also recorded provinces with no more than 10 language/literature communities. These provinces include North Maluku, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, Riau Islands, West Nusa Tenggara, and South Kalimantan.

However, as of June 26, 2025, data on language/literature communities was unavailable for 8 provinces:

• South Papua
• Highland Papua
• Central Papua
• Southwest Papua
• West Papua
• North Kalimantan
• West Sulawesi.
