According to a survey by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a portion of the global population has fewer children than they initially planned.

"Across every country, the most common number of children desired was two. But every country surveyed had significant proportions of people who reported having to revise their intended family size," said UNFPA in the State of World Population 2025.

Of 10,000 global respondents who have or want to have children, 39% feel their ability to realize their desired number of children is affected by financial limitations.

This is also the case in Indonesia. UNFPA found that 39% of Indonesian respondents felt they had or intended to reduce the number of children due to financial limitations.

Furthermore, 22% felt similarly due to housing limitations, such as a lack of space in their homes or high rental/purchase prices.

Others reduced the number of children due to unemployment or job insecurity (20%), and a lack of sufficient/quality childcare (6%).

UNFPA conducted this survey in collaboration with YouGov, involving approximately 14,000 adult respondents across 14 countries between November 15 and December 5, 2024.

Besides Indonesia, respondents came from South Korea, Thailand, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, India, Morocco, South Africa, and Nigeria.
