According to a survey by Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS), approximately 47.56% of Indonesians aged five years and older had watched performing arts live in 2024.
Those who watched performances or art exhibitions indirectly accounted for 27.90%, while 24.54% had never watched any performing arts at all.
The most frequently viewed types of performing arts were music, film, and Indonesian traditional dance.
Here's a breakdown of the percentage of Indonesian households that watched performing arts, both directly and indirectly, by type in 2024:
* Music: 52.55%
* Film: 50.74%
* Indonesian Cultural Dance: 26.96%
* Theater or Wayang (shadow puppet) performances: 8.69%
* Visual Arts: 4.59%
* Media Arts: 4.34%
* Literary Arts: 3.28%
* Other: 20.32%
"Music or audio arts are the most popular types of art to watch, both directly and indirectly. Meanwhile, literary arts, media arts, and visual arts have not yet attracted much public interest," stated the BPS in its report.
BPS also revealed that public involvement in artistic activities is relatively low. Based on the survey, only about 3.47% of the population aged five years and older had participated in performing arts or art exhibitions in 2024.
"Women had relatively higher involvement (3.86%) compared to men (3.08%)," said BPS.
"On the other hand, the higher the household expenditure distribution, the greater the percentage of the population aged five years and older involved in performing arts or art exhibitions. However, the difference is not very significant between these groups," they said.
