The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has found 91 cosmetic brands suspected of illegal production and violations.

This finding stems from BPOM's inspection conducted from February 10-18, 2025, targeting factories, importers, businesses, distributors, brand owners, beauty clinics and salons, resellers, and cosmetic retailers.

"There were 4,334 items with 205,133 pieces, with an economic value exceeding Rp31.7 billion," said BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar in a press conference on Friday (2/21/2025).

Of these findings, the majority, or 79.9%, were illegally imported cosmetics without distribution permits.

Furthermore, 17.4% contained hazardous substances, including skincare products with blue labels that did not comply with regulations. This was followed by 2.6% expired cosmetics and 0.1% beauty injection products.

Taruna stated that the proliferation of illegal cosmetics is influenced by a shift in consumer behavior towards obtaining cosmetics online through reviews from influencers.

"Don't be easily influenced by advertisements for cosmetic products that make excessive claims, including those promising instant and harmful effects," he said.
