The Human Development Index (HDI) is an indicator compiled by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) to measure the development of the quality of life of the population in the dimensions of health, knowledge, and decent living standards.
The health dimension is measured based on life expectancy at birth; knowledge is measured by expected years of schooling and average years of schooling; and decent living standards are measured by real per capita expenditure adjusted for purchasing power parity.
These various indicators are then formulated into a score on a scale of 0-100. The higher the score, the better the development of the quality of life of the population is assumed to be, with the following classification:
* Low: HDI score < 60
* Medium: HDI score 60 to < 70
* High: HDI score 70 to < 80
* Very high: HDI score 80 to 100
"The HDI is strategic data because, in addition to being a measure of government performance, the HDI is also used as one of the allocators in determining the General Allocation Fund (DAU)," said BPS in the *New Method HDI Booklet*.
The DAU is a fund allocated by the central government to local governments to finance regional needs.
According to the BPS report, in the last five years the national HDI score has continued to rise, reaching 75.02 in 2024, falling into the "high" category.
However, the score varies when viewed at the provincial level. In 2024, there were 2 provinces with a "very high" HDI score, 30 provinces with a "high" score, 5 provinces with a "medium" score, and 1 province with a "low" score.
