Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the rate of "cerai mati" (death-related dissolution of marriage) among couples in Indonesia reached 6.17% in 2024.
"Cerai mati" refers to the marital status where one spouse (either husband or wife) dies and the surviving spouse has not remarried.
Based on province, the highest rate of "cerai mati" was in East Java, at 8.76% of all married couples in the province.
Second was Yogyakarta Special Region with a proportion of 8.04%. Third was Central Java, at 7.58%.
Fourth was North Sulawesi, at 6.66%, followed by South Sulawesi in fifth place at 6.62%.
The remaining provinces in the top ten were Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, Gorontalo, South Kalimantan, and Aceh.
Meanwhile, the provinces with the lowest rates of "cerai mati" in Indonesia were Papua Pegunungan (2.27%), Central Papua (3.18%), and Southwest Papua (3.77%).
