Development of Live Birth Registration in Indonesia Over the Last 5 Years

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has compiled the development of live birth registrations in Indonesia over the past five years. BPS considers this crucial for understanding reporting patterns, conducting improvement evaluations, and determining necessary interventions.

BPS states that the completeness of birth registration has improved. The completeness estimate, based on the mandated timeframe, is the reporting conducted within a maximum of 60 days after birth.

Based on data up to the cut-off date of March 2024, only the 2019 and 2020 births have an estimated registration completeness above 90%. The number of registered births was 4.45 million in 2019 and 4.28 million in 2020.

Meanwhile, the estimated completeness of birth registration for 2021 reached 85.01% by the March 2024 cut-off date. The number of recorded births was 3.97 million.

The completeness of birth registration for 2022 was 75.49%. The actual number of registered births was 3.5 million.

Finally, the completeness of birth registration for 2023 up to the cut-off date was recorded at 62.11%. The number of reported births was 2.87 million.

BPS explains that this data shows that births each year are not fully registered in the same year.

"It is expected to approach an estimated completeness of over 90% after entering the fifth year," BPS stated in a report quoted on Tuesday (October 23, 2024).

BPS notes that the 2019 projection data is the result of backcasting. The number of births was obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The estimated completeness of birth registration was calculated by BPS.
