The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) released the 2024 Indonesian Digital Society Index (IMDI). This index aims to measure the competence and skills of Indonesian citizens in using digital technology in their daily lives and work.
Data collection involved gathering information from ministries/agencies, surveys of over 17,000 individual respondents, and 10,000 industry respondents spread across 514 regencies/cities.
The IMDI score is assessed based on four pillars: infrastructure and ecosystem, digital skills, empowerment, and employment.
The national IMDI score reached 43.34 points in 2024, a 0.17-point increase from 43.18 points in 2023. This increase was driven by the digital skills pillar, which scored 58.25 points, a 1.66-point increase, and the employment pillar, which scored 38.09 points, a 5.95-point increase.
The other two pillars, however, saw decreases: the infrastructure and ecosystem pillar scored 52.70 points (a 4.39-point decrease), and the empowerment pillar scored 25.66 points (a 0.53-point decrease).
Although the national IMDI score has increased for three consecutive years, Hari Budiarto, Head of the Human Resources Development Agency for Communication and Informatics at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, noted that the score is still below 50 points. This means that Indonesian society has not yet optimally adopted digital technology.
He assessed that people's skills in using digital devices are primarily used for communication. Meanwhile, training efforts to improve industrial competitiveness through digital devices are relatively lacking.
“Many regional heads who participated in the Ministry of Communication and Informatics' digital leadership program said they have created various public service platforms for remote access, but residents still come to access services offline,” said Hari during the launch of the 2024 IMDI results in Jakarta, as reported by *Harian Kompas* on Tuesday (September 10, 2024).
Of the 38 provinces, none achieved a "very high" digital society index. Only 5 provinces had IMDI scores in the "sufficient" category.
