A data center or data center is a physical facility (such as a room or building) containing hardware and various supporting systems for information and communication technology (ICT).

This facility serves to store and manage large amounts of data, for organizational, business, and governmental purposes.

According to Cloudscene data, in 2024 there were more than 11,800 data centers operating worldwide.

The United States (US) has the highest number of data centers, with 5,388 units as of September 23, 2024. This figure represents 45% of the total number of global data centers.

Cloudscene states that US data centers are generally located in economic centers such as New York and Chicago. Many US data centers are also built in government centers like Washington DC.

Meanwhile, according to Cloudscene records, Indonesia only has 84 data centers.

Indonesia Builds New Data Centers

According to Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto, the Indonesian government is currently building three new national data centers (PDN).

The first PDN is located in Cikarang, the second in Batam, and the third in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). All are built through a soft loan scheme from other countries.

In a working meeting with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Monday (September 23, 2024), Hadi claimed that the construction progress of the PDN in Cikarang has reached 83% and is targeted to be operational in 2026.

Construction of the PDN in Batam has passed the land acquisition process and is now entering the process of appointing a supervising consultant.

Meanwhile, the PDN in IKN is still in the location determination phase.
