Indonesia's Population Reaches 282.4 Million in the First Half of 2024, Half Residing in Java

Based on data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Ditjen Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), Indonesia's population reached 282,477,584 as of the first semester of 2024.

"(The number) increased by 1,752,156 compared to the second semester of 2023," said the Director General of Dukcapil Kemendagri, Teguh Setyabudi, in a Net Population Data Release on his YouTube channel, Wednesday (7/8/2024).

He detailed that 142,569,663 were male and 139,907,921 were female.

Considering the regional distribution, more than half of Indonesia's population is concentrated on Java Island, accounting for 55.93% of the total population in the first semester of 2024.

"55.93% (of the population) is on Java Island. This leads to the question of whether economic circulation and so on are centered in Java," said Teguh.

Next, 21.81% of the country's population resides on Sumatra Island. Then 7.36% in Sulawesi, 6.18% in Kalimantan, and 5.56% in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Meanwhile, Papua and Maluku have the lowest national population, with proportions of only 2% and 1.17% respectively.

The Ministry of Home Affairs also stated that of the 283.47 million Indonesian population in the first semester of this year, 207.88 million are required to have an ID card (KTP).

"Currently, 97.19% have been recorded. We continue to push this because the target for this year is 99.4%, just a little more to go," said Teguh.
