Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again in the early hours of today, with volcanic ash reaching 800 meters above the summit.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 04:51 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 10 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak or 2,384 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 161 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 25, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 3 times of puffing earthquakes with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 69-450 seconds.

Then, 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 118 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters (S-P not observed) and a duration of 118 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,049 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,689 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 697 times.
