According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), 7,435 cases of domestic violence (KDRT) were reported to the police throughout 2021. This number is 8.25% lower than the previous year, which reached 8,104 cases.
Domestic violence is gender-based violence that occurs in the personal sphere, with women most often being the victims. It frequently occurs within personal relationships known to the victim.
The highest number of reported domestic violence cases occurred in North Sumatra Police jurisdiction, reaching 837 cases. This accounts for 11.26% of the national total and is higher than the previous year's 746 cases.
The next highest number of cases were reported in South Sulawesi Police jurisdiction (812 cases, 10.92%), followed by Metro Jaya Police (693 cases, 9.32%), and East Java Police (651 cases, 8.76%).
The lowest number of domestic violence cases were reported in North Kalimantan Police jurisdiction, with only 16 cases last year. This was followed by Bangka Belitung Islands Police (29 cases) and North Maluku Police (48 cases).

To eradicate domestic violence, the government issued Law Number 23 of 2004 on the Elimination of Domestic Violence (UUPKDRT).
The objectives of the UUPKDRT, as stated in Article 4, are as follows:
* To prevent all forms of domestic violence.
* To protect victims of domestic violence.
* To prosecute perpetrators of domestic violence.
* To maintain harmonious and prosperous family units.
Article 1 of the UUPKDRT defines domestic violence as "any act against a person, especially women, that results in physical, sexual, psychological suffering or neglect, including threats to commit such acts, coercion, or unlawful deprivation of liberty within the household."
