Marriage Rates in Indonesia Decreased in 2019

Data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded the highest national marriage ratio per 1,000 people in Central Java in 2019, at 8.99. This means that for every 1,000 people in Central Java, 9 people got married. However, this ratio is lower than in 2018, decreasing by 0.31.

East Java was second, with a ratio of 8.55. This ratio also decreased from 8.6 in 2018. Among the five provinces with the highest national marriage ratios, Aceh experienced the steepest decline, from 10.3 in 2018 to 8.5 the following year.

Nationally, the number of marriages in 2019 totaled 1,970,446, a decrease of 45,934 from 2018, which totaled 2,016,380.

The decline in marriage rates also occurred worldwide. *Our World in Data* shows a decline in marriages in rich, developing, and poor countries. In the United States, for example, the marriage ratio fell from 10.6 per 1,000 people to 7 in 2016. South Korea decreased from 9.2 in 1970 to 5.5 in 2016. Chile decreased from 8.1 in 1970 to 3.5 in 2006, and Libya decreased from 7.3 in 1970 to 6 in 2002.

The Pew Research Center cites several factors contributing to the global decline in marriage rates, including young adults delaying marriage, fear of social realities such as divorce, and increasing levels of education.
