According to data from the National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas), Yogyakarta Special Region was the province with the highest reading interest among its residents in 2023. The reading interest level (RIL) score in the province reached 73.27 points last year.
Perpusnas recorded that the average resident of Yogyakarta Special Region reads books approximately 5 to 6 times a week, with an average reading duration of 2 hours and 9 minutes per day, and an average of 5 to 6 books read every three months.
Central Java ranked second with a RIL score of 71.31 points in 2023, followed by West Java with a score of 70.47 points.
Furthermore, Jakarta, East Java, and North Kalimantan were also included in the top 10 national RIL scores last year.
Meanwhile, Papua had the lowest reading interest among its residents, with a RIL score of only 60.58 points.
Above Papua were Central Sulawesi and West Papua, with RIL scores of 61.28 points and 62.8 points respectively.

Nationally, the overall reading interest level of Indonesian society in 2023 was 66.67, categorized as moderate. This figure increased by 2.77 points compared to 2022, which was 63.9.
