Mount Dukono Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Column Reaches 3,950 Meters Above Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 6:07 PM WIT. This is the third eruption in the last week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to reach 3,950 meters above the peak or 5,037 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white, gray, and black with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dukono's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on July 10, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 31 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-20 millimeters and durations of 31.41-61.93 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 17 millimeters, s-p not observed, and a duration of 44.14 seconds, as well as 4 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-34 millimeters, s-p 22.03 seconds, and durations of 76.32-90.12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,565 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (687 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 31 times.
