The Indonesian Trafficking in Persons Task Force (Satgas TPPO) has collected data on victims of human trafficking between June 5th and July 3rd, 2023.
According to a press conference led by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam), Mahfud MD, 1,943 victims of this crime have been rescued. Simultaneously, 698 individuals have been named as suspects.
"The types of crimes include online gambling scams, prostitution, forced labor on ships, domestic work in various places where victims are unpaid but prevented from returning due to contracts, and torture of Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) in various countries," said Mahfud MD at the Kemenko Polhukam office, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (4/7/2023).
The victims of human trafficking were predominantly and deceptively recruited as illegal Indonesian migrant workers (PMI), comprising 65.5% of the total victims. Another 26.5% were victims of commercial sex work (PSK).
Other modus operandi included the exploitation of child workers (6.6%) and seafarers (ABK) (1.43%).
Mahfud explained that this number does not include victims of organ trafficking. They were sent abroad without knowing that their organs, including kidneys, were sold and stored in various hospitals. Mahfud also stated that they did not receive adequate medical care.
"I received information that 14 (Indonesians) are still detained in a hospital in one country because of kidney sales. However, they were told they would be working at a restaurant or other establishment here (in Indonesia)," said Mahfud.
The TPPO Task Force, led by National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has filed 605 police reports related to these crimes.
This task force, in addition to involving the National Police and Kemenko Polhukam, is also assisted by the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK), the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), and other elements.
