Yogyakarta Residents Are the Biggest Readers in Indonesia

Data from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the reading interest level (RIL) of the community in Yogyakarta Special Region in 2021 was 70.55, categorized as "high." This score was the highest compared to other provinces.

BPS recorded that the average reading activity of the Yogyakarta Special Region community was more than six times a week, with an average reading duration of 1 hour and 46 minutes per day, and an average number of books read of 5-6 books per three months.

Central Java was in second place with an RIL of 68.3. Following were East Kalimantan and East Java with RILs of 64.85 and 64.2, respectively.

The RIL score has a scale range of 0-100. Reading interest levels are categorized as follows: "very low" (0-20), "low" (20.1-40), "medium" (40.1-60), "high" (60.1-80), and "very high" (80.1-100).

Meanwhile, the overall reading interest level of the Indonesian population in 2021 was 59.52, categorized as "medium." This figure increased by 3.78 points compared to 2020.

BPS recorded that the reading interest level of 18 provinces in Indonesia was categorized as high, while the remaining 16 provinces were categorized as medium.
