10 Regencies/Cities with the Lowest Poverty Rates in East Java

The number of poor people in East Java increased by 153,630 to 4.57 million in March 2021, compared to 4.42 million in March 2020. Ten regencies/cities in East Java have the lowest poverty rates.

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the number of poor people in Batu City increased by 510 to 8,630 in March 2021 from 8,120 in March 2020. Similarly, the poverty rate increased to 4.09% in March 2021 from the previous period.

Batu City's poverty rate is lower than the East Java provincial poverty rate of 11.4% in March 2021. This is also the lowest compared to the other 37 regencies/cities.

Malang City is second lowest with a poverty rate of 4.62% in March 2021. This is followed by Madiun City at 5.09%, Surabaya City at 5.23%, and Sidoarjo Regency at 5.93%.

Mojokerto City also has a poverty rate of 6.39%. This is followed by Pasuruan City at 6.88%, Probolinggo City at 7.44%, and Tulungagung Regency and Kediri City at 7.51% and 7.75% respectively.

The Covid-19 pandemic caused an increase in the number of people living below the poverty line in the province, coinciding with the implementation of restrictions on community activities.
