Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Evening (Monday, July 1, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 3:51 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 100 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 1, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB showed 42 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 64-132 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 rockfall event with an amplitude of 2 mm and a duration of 64 seconds, and 10 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 39-88 seconds.

The PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,374 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 601 eruptions.
