Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Eruption Height Approximately 600 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, September 16, 2024, at 2:09 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak or 2,184 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 9.6 millimeters and a duration of 546 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 16, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.2-2.9 millimeters and durations of 209-243 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.9-22 millimeters, s-p 0.8-1.1 seconds, and durations of 10-16 seconds; and 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-44.4 millimeters, s-p 10-23 seconds, and durations of 132-134 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,728 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,519 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 658 times.
