North Sumatra Has the Largest Number of Christian Adherents Nationally

North Sumatra is the Indonesian province with the largest Christian population. Based on data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the number of Christians in the province reached 4.08 million people, or 20.02% of its population as of June 2021.

The next province with the largest Christian population is Papua, with 2.99 million people (14.48%). This is followed by East Nusa Tenggara with 1.98 million Christians (9.72%).

North Sulawesi has a recorded Christian population of 1.67 million (8.2%). Then, there are 963,190 (4.72%) Christians in Jakarta.

In West Java, there are 859,370 (4.21%) Christians. The Christian population of Maluku reaches 739,370 (3.62%).

A total of 693,510 (3.4%) of South Sulawesi's population is also recorded as Christian. The Christian population of East Java reaches 683,720 (3.35%). Meanwhile, the Christian population of West Kalimantan numbers 631,790 (3.1%).

For information, the proportion of Indonesia's population that is Christian is 7.49% of the total population of 272.23 million. This figure is second only to the proportion of the Muslim population, which reaches 86.87%.
