These are the Leading Causes of Infant Mortality in Indonesia in 2022

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the infant mortality rate in Indonesia reached 19.83 per 1,000 live births in 2022.

This means that out of 1,000 children born alive, approximately 20 die before reaching the age of 5.

So, what are the causes of infant mortality in Indonesia?

Based on the results of the 2020 Long Form Population Census by BPS, the majority, or 72.77%, of infants in Indonesia died from non-communicable diseases.

The next cause is accidents, including traffic accidents and other accidents, accounting for 3%.

Furthermore, 2.42% of infant deaths were caused by COVID-19, and 1.44% were due to communicable diseases. Meanwhile, 20.37% of infants died from other causes.

BPS also recorded that the highest infant mortality rate occurred in Papua Province, at 49.04 per 1,000 live births in 2022.

This is followed by West Papua with 47.23 deaths per 1,000 live births and Maluku with 36.53 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Meanwhile, the lowest infant mortality rate was recorded in DKI Jakarta, at 12.02 per 1,000 live births in the same period.

This is followed by Yogyakarta Special Region and Central Java, which have infant mortality rates of 12.62 and 14.81 per 1,000 live births, respectively.
