Drugs and prison life have resurfaced in the public eye following a widely viewed interview of veteran actor Tio Pakusodewo by presenter Uya Kuya on a YouTube channel.
As reported by Katadata, Tio described how drug factories are controlled from within prisons. His account is based on his own experiences; he has been imprisoned twice for drug use, most recently in 2020.
"They make it inside, (for example) vape pens containing cannabis," Tio told Uya Kuya in the interview aired on Sunday (30/4/2023), as quoted by *Katadata*.
Furthermore, Tio mentioned an inmate who orchestrated drug production from his cell. This inmate allegedly controlled drug distribution in various locations, including Bali and Bandung.
Beyond this issue, what is the actual number of inmates and the capacity of narcotics prisons in Indonesia?
According to the *Indonesia Drugs Report 2022* from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), at least 13 prisons are overcrowded with narcotics inmates and detainees.
In Class IIA Sungguminasa, South Sulawesi, for instance, the number of inmates and detainees reached 1,122, while the prison capacity is only 360.
Class IIB Banyuasin, South Sumatra, faces a similar situation. The number of narcotics inmates and detainees is 1,098, while the capacity is only 484.
Jakarta also has a large number of narcotics inmates and detainees, namely 1,893. However, the capacity of the Class IIA Jakarta Narcotics Prison is only 1,084.
Only 11 prisons still have sufficient capacity to accommodate inmates and detainees involved in narcotics offenses. For example, Class IIA Pamekasan, East Java, houses 421 inmates and detainees with a prison capacity of 1,234.
There is also the Class IIB Purwokerto Narcotics Prison, Central Java, which houses 60 inmates with a capacity of 250.
