The Number of Buddhist Followers in Indonesia Ranked Among the Top 20 Largest in the World in 2020

Global Religious Futures estimates that the number of Buddhists in Indonesia was 1.8 million in 2020. This figure represents 0.36% of the total number of Buddhists worldwide, which was 506.99 million. This also places Indonesia 16th in the world in terms of the number of Buddhists.

The country with the largest Buddhist population is China, with 254.7 million, representing half (50.24%) of the world's Buddhist adherents.

The next largest Buddhist populations are in Thailand (66.12 million, or 13.04%), and Myanmar (41.44 million, or 8.17%).

Global Religious Futures also reports that 499.41 million Buddhists (98.5%) reside in the Asia-Pacific region. There are 4.54 million (0.9%) in the United States, 1.67 million (0.33%) in Europe, 760,000 (0.15%) in the Middle East and North Africa, 440,000 (0.09%) in Latin America, and 170,000 (0.03%) in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to data from the Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the number of Buddhists in Indonesia reached 2.04 million in June 2021. This represents 0.75% of the total population of 272.23 million. The highest concentration of Buddhists in Indonesia is in Jakarta, with 396,910 (19.46% of Indonesia's total Buddhist population).
