Turkey Became the Country Hosting the Most Refugees in 2022

A report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) states that 108.4 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced due to persecution, violence, and human rights violations in their home countries.

Countries bordering conflict zones and war-torn regions often become destinations for refugees seeking safety.

According to the UNHCR report, Turkey was the country hosting the most border refugees in 2022.

A total of 3.56 million refugees sought refuge in Turkey. Almost all refugees in Turkey originated from Syria.

In 2022, the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey increased by 5% year-on-year (YoY) from 191,600 refugees in 2021.

Iran followed in second place as the country with the largest refugee population in the world. The number of refugees in Iran increased from 161,600 in the previous year (YoY) to 3.4 million in 2022.

Colombia ranked third with 2.45 million refugees requiring protection.

The Russian Federation, meanwhile, hosted 1.27 million refugees, 65,400 of whom were Ukrainian citizens granted temporary asylum.
