Disputes are the Leading Cause of Divorce Cases in Jakarta

The Jakarta Provincial Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that there were 14,411 divorces in Jakarta throughout 2020. Continuous disagreements and quarrels were the leading cause, accounting for 8,564 cases.

The next highest cause was household economic problems, with 3,024 cases. This was followed by 2,419 cases resulting from one party (husband/wife) abandoning the other. Meanwhile, 191 cases were due to domestic violence (KDRT), and 72 cases were due to one party changing religion.

In 2020, East Jakarta had the highest number of divorce cases in DKI Jakarta, with 4,298 cases. Conversely, Central Jakarta had the lowest number, with 1,384 cases.

According to Government Regulation No. 9 of 1975, continuous disagreements and quarrels between husband and wife will only cause harm to both parties and make it extremely difficult to find harmony in the marriage.

Even after divorce, both husband and wife retain the obligation to raise their children. Custody decisions are made based on the divorce proceedings.
