Mount Marapi Erupted on Thursday Night, Status is Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Thursday (February 5, 2026) at 10:25 PM WIB. In the past week, Mount Marapi has erupted 3 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height is approximately 3,000 meters above the peak (5,891 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and a duration of 87 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on February 5, 2026 from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 1 explosion earthquake with an amplitude of 1.8 millimeters and a duration of 34 seconds.

Then, 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.5 millimeters and a duration of 12 seconds, as well as 2 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 14.4-15.7 millimeters, s-p 1.3-1.7 seconds, and durations of 18-22 seconds.

PVMBG urges people around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the activity center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 491 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (258 times) while Mount Marapi has erupted 13 times.
