Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Early Morning (Sunday, January 25, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday (1/25/2026) at 04:33 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 32 times.

Reporting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed reached 800 meters above the peak or 4,476 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 156 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 25, 2026, at 6:00 PM - 11:59 PM WIB showed 22 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and quake durations of 70-136 seconds.

Then, 3 times of avalanche quakes with amplitudes of 1-2 mm and quake durations of 45-51 seconds, and 16 times of emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and quake durations of 36-69 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan as there is potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 329 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions with 178 times.
