Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 600 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 7:36 AM WITA. This is the second eruption in the last week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column reached a height of 600 meters above the peak, or 2,184 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.18 millimeters and a duration of 409 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 19, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 27.38 millimeters and a duration of 236 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.22-3.7 millimeters and durations of 7-12 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 14.06 millimeters, S-P 23 seconds, and a duration of 84 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and within a 4-kilometer radius in the northwest, north, and south-southeast directions from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,908 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,084 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 524 times.
