The Majority of West Java's Population Was of Working Age in June 2022

West Java is the most populous province in Indonesia. Based on data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil), the population of Tanah Pasundan reached 48.64 million in June 2022. This represents more than 17% of Indonesia's total population.

Based on age group, the majority, or 33.52 million (68.9%), of West Java's population falls within the productive age group (15-64 years old).

There are also 15.12 million (31.09%) people in the non-productive age group. This comprises 12.29 million (25.28%) in the non-productive age group (0-14 years old) and 2.83 million (5.81%) in the unproductive age group (65 years and older).

With this population composition, West Java's dependency ratio was 45.1% in June 2022. This means that every 100 people of productive age support approximately 45 people of non-productive age.

This dominant number of people of productive age can be an important asset for accelerating development if managed well by the local government.

An abundance of human resources (HR) alongside a large productive-age population will be beneficial if it can be absorbed into the business world, increasing per capita income.

However, if not managed properly, this risks backfiring due to increased unemployment, which could burden the government.
