Gorontalo, South Sulawesi, and Central Sulawesi had the highest rates of domestic violence (DV) in 2018. Gorontalo ranked first with a ratio of 81.1. This means that for every 100,000 households in Gorontalo, there were 81 cases of DV. South Sulawesi followed with 55.5, and Central Sulawesi with 46.2.

These three provinces exceeded the national average DV ratio of 20.9. The Director General of the Religious Court Agency of the Supreme Court stated that DV is the fourth leading cause of divorce in Indonesia.

The Gorontalo City Religious Court stated that DV is the fourth leading cause of divorce in Gorontalo, after disputes, desertion, and economic factors. Meanwhile, data from the Makassar City Police reveals that DV in South Sulawesi, particularly Makassar City, is caused by low legal awareness, the persistence of patriarchal culture, economic conditions/poverty, environment, and alcohol consumption.

DV is an act committed within a household by a husband, wife, or child that negatively impacts physical and psychological well-being and the harmony of the household (Law on the Elimination of Domestic Violence).
