Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Thursday, August 29, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 12:15 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 62 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, no visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations from August 29, 2024, 00:00-23:59 WIB, showed 113 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 52-203 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 11 guguran (rockfall) quakes with amplitudes of 3-12 mm and durations of 42-98 seconds, and 23 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 40-65 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river edge) along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for expansion of pyroclastic flows and lahars up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,234 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,245 times), while Mount Semeru erupted 1,084 times.
