East Kalimantan's Mass Conflicts Higher Than Other Kalimantan Regions

East Kalimantan was chosen as the location for the new capital city. The Deputy Governor of East Kalimantan, Hadi Mulyadi, once stated that East Kalimantan has never experienced massive social conflict despite its heterogeneous population. Based on 2018 crime statistics released by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), East Kalimantan was one of the 10 provinces with the lowest incidence of mass conflict in 2017.

The percentage of villages or sub-districts in East Kalimantan experiencing mass conflict was 1.64%, ranking among the lowest 10 in Indonesia. A total of 17 mass conflicts occurred in East Kalimantan.

However, compared to other provinces in Kalimantan, mass conflicts in East Kalimantan are still higher. Central Kalimantan has the lowest rate of mass conflict in Kalimantan and the third lowest in Indonesia, with a mass conflict percentage of 0.82%.

The percentage of mass conflicts in North Kalimantan and South Kalimantan were 1.04% and 1.05% respectively. Meanwhile, West Kalimantan ranked ninth lowest with a mass conflict percentage of 1.4%.

Types of mass conflicts include inter-group fights among residents, fights between residents of different villages/sub-districts, fights between residents and security forces, fights between residents and government officials, fights among students, and inter-ethnic fights.
