Urban populations are less corrupt than rural populations.

A report by Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that urban communities are more anti-corruption than rural communities. This is evident from the higher Anti-Corruption Behavior Index (IPAK) scores in urban areas compared to rural areas over the past nine years.

Urban IPAK scores have consistently been above 3.6 since 2012. In 2021, the urban IPAK score was recorded at 3.92.

Meanwhile, the rural IPAK was below 3.6 from 2012 to 2019. It only reached above 3.8 starting in 2020. This year, the rural IPAK score reached 3.83.

The BPS states that the difference in exposure to information related to anti-corruption socialization between rural and urban communities is suspected to influence perceptions of corruption prevention behavior. As a result, urban communities tend to be more easily exposed to anti-corruption information.

Indonesia's overall IPAK score was 3.88 in 2021. This figure is higher than the previous year's score of 3.84.

For information, the IPAK value uses a scale of 0 to 5. An index value closer to 5 indicates that the community is increasingly behaving anti-corruption. Conversely, an index value closer to 0 indicates that the community is increasingly permissive towards corruption.
