83.85% of students from elementary to high school are Muslim.

The Ministry of Education and Culture recorded 45.4 million students from elementary school to senior high school/vocational high school levels in the 2020/2021 academic year. 38 million students, or 83.85% of the total, are adherents of the Islamic religion.

This is followed by Protestant students numbering 4.3 million, equivalent to 9.39% of the total number of students in Indonesia.

The next largest religious group among students is Catholic, with 1.9 million students or 4.13%. Hindu follows with 860,900 students, or 1.9%.

Meanwhile, students adhering to Buddhism number 288,200, or 0.64%, and those of the Confucian faith number 11,300, or 0.02%.

According to education level, all religious adherents are most widely distributed among elementary school students. This is because elementary schools have a larger student population than junior high schools and senior high schools/vocational high schools.
