According to the latest data released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), the total area of Palestine reached 6,025 square kilometers (km²) in 2017.

This figure is divided into the West Bank, covering 5,660 km², and the Gaza Strip, covering 365 km².

The West Bank accounts for approximately 94% of the total area of Palestine, while the Gaza Strip accounts for only 6%.

The West Bank borders Jordan and the Dead Sea. It experiences hot, dry summers and short, wet, cool winters. Temperatures and rainfall vary depending on altitude.

The Gaza Strip borders the Mediterranean Sea and Egypt. It has cool winters and hot summers, prone to drought.

The West Bank and Gaza Strip are separated by territory now recognized as belonging to Israel.

According to Al-Jazeera, the total area of Palestine was once 26,323 km², approximately four times its current size.

However, since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Israel has continuously annexed or occupied Palestinian territory. Annexation is the unilateral act of a state incorporating the territory of another state into its own borders.

"International law is very clear: annexation and the acquisition of territory by conquest are prohibited under the UN Charter," said UN independent human rights expert Michael Lynk, as reported by Al-Jazeera (June 26, 2020).
