Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, July 26, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 5:47 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 43 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on July 26, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 52 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 65-215 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 10 guguran (rockfall) quakes with amplitudes of 2-12 mm and durations of 47-111 seconds, and 9 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 14-64 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not conduct activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lahars up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,081 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 743 recorded events.
