Dimas Bagus Arya, Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), stated that efforts to abolish the death penalty in Indonesia remain challenging, despite the recent revisions to the Criminal Code (KUHP).

KontraS data shows that 27 death sentences were handed down between October 2022 and September 2023.

"During this period, we highlight the arduous path towards abolishing the death penalty, even though Indonesia has made breakthroughs in updating its death penalty policy through the KUHP," wrote Dimas in a report published on World Day Against the Death Penalty, Tuesday (10/10/2023).

He further detailed that the majority of death sentences in Indonesia were for narcotics offenses (18 sentences).

This was followed by premeditated murder (7 sentences) and sexual violence (2 sentences).

KontraS also found that District Courts (PN) handed down the most death sentences (20 sentences).

Three sentences were handed down by High Courts and four by the Supreme Court.

"Based on this data, we assess that the Indonesian government remains passive in responding to the global trend clearly showing a decrease in death sentences," explained Dimas.

KontraS notes that 112 countries have abolished the death penalty. Another 23 countries still have the death penalty in their legal codes but have not carried out any executions.

Indonesia is one of 55 countries that still retain the death penalty.

"This global phenomenon should be a significant consideration for the Indonesian government to implement a national moratorium on the death penalty and prepare appropriate steps regarding capital punishment," Dimas stated.
