According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in September 2022, there were approximately 26.36 million poor people in Indonesia, an increase of 200,000 compared to March 2022.
The national poverty rate also increased from 9.54% in March 2022 to 9.57% in September 2022.
"The increase in the number and percentage of the poor population in the periods of September 2013, March 2015, and September 2022 occurred after an increase in the prices of basic necessities, as a result of the increase in fuel prices," said BPS in its report, *Poverty Profile in Indonesia*, released on Monday (March 16, 2023).
BPS defines the poor population as those whose average expenditure is below the Poverty Line.
The Poverty Line in September 2022 was set at Rp535,547 per capita per month.
"In September 2022, on average, poor households in Indonesia had 4.34 members. Thus, the average size of the Poverty Line for poor households is Rp2,324,274 per poor household per month," said BPS.
