Mount Marapi Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 750 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 08:42 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 750 meters above the peak or 3,641 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with low to moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 10, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters and a duration of 140 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-14 millimeters and durations of 60-420 seconds, and 2 local tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.7-2.4 millimeters, S-P 2-2.1 seconds, and durations of 15-26 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 977 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (401 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 189 times.
