Warning! Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon (Tuesday, August 20, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 5:38 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 2,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.7 millimeters and a duration of 415 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 20, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 5.1 millimeters and a duration of 248 seconds.

Then, 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 5.92 millimeters, s-p 3.08 seconds, and a duration of 27 seconds; and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.92 millimeters, s-p 10.83 seconds, and a duration of 37 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northwest, north, and south-southeast directions from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,939 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,089 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 533 times.
