Top 10 Regional Offices with the Highest Number of Prison Inmates

Data from the Directorate General of Corrections, Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia shows that the number of inmates in Indonesian correctional facilities (Lapas) reached 271,007 (201%) exceeding the total capacity of 134,835.

Of all correctional facilities in Indonesia, those in the Regional Office (Kanwil) of the Directorate General of Corrections in North Sumatra recorded the highest number of inmates, reaching 35,088 (277.88%) exceeding capacity. Next are correctional facilities in the East Java Regional Office with 28,820 inmates (218.2%), West Java with 23,320 inmates (138.57%), and DKI Jakarta with 17,890 inmates (298.71%).

Other correctional facilities with a high number of inmates include those in the South Sumatra Regional Office with 15,370 inmates (234.33%), Central Java with 13,790 inmates (137.54%), Riau with 13,440 inmates (330.42%), East Kalimantan with 12,660 inmates (318.2%), South Sulawesi with 10,760 inmates (176.73%), and Banten with 10,730 inmates (200.75%).

A fire at Class I Tangerang City Correctional Facility on Saturday, September 8, 2011, killed 46 inmates. This is not the first such incident; similar fires have occurred at the Tanjung Gusta Medan Correctional Facility in North Sumatra in July 2013 and at the Class III Women's Correctional Facility in Palu.

There are 49,391 inmates with detainee status and 221,616 inmates with convict status. Meanwhile, 129,946 inmates are incarcerated for general criminal offenses, and 141,061 for special criminal offenses.
