The Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education has made a breakthrough policy regarding the requirements for individuals to teach or become lecturers in higher education institutions. Previously, the government mandated that lecturers must hold a Master's degree (S2). However, this is no longer a primary requirement.
The Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, Mohamad Nasir, stated that individuals without a degree but with excellent competence should also be given the opportunity to teach. Previously requiring an S2 degree, individuals with a Bachelor's degree (S1) or a Diploma IV (D4) can now become lecturers. However, they must possess qualifications from the Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI).
Of the 263,000 lecturers, 49,000 have a D3 or S1 education. Approximately 195,000 lecturers have an S2 or S3 education, while those with Specialist (Sp) qualifications number three thousand. Meanwhile, those from professional backgrounds comprise 1,292,000 lecturers, and those without a formal degree level account for approximately 15,000.
