According to Statistics Indonesia, the number of divorce cases in Indonesia reached 447,743 in 2021, a 53.50% increase compared to 2020.
West Java recorded the highest number of divorces.
In 2021, the number of divorce cases in West Java reached 98,088, or 21.9% of the total national divorce cases. Approximately 75.6% of divorces in this province were initiated by the wife (cerai gugat), while the remaining 24.4% were initiated by the husband (cerai talak).
East Java ranked second with the highest number of divorces, at 88,235 cases throughout 2021. Central Java followed with 75,509 cases.
Next were North Sumatra and Jakarta, each recording 17,270 and 16,017 divorce cases, respectively.
Then, Banten had 15,668 divorce cases, South Sulawesi 15,575 cases, Lampung 15,033 cases, Riau 12,722 cases, and South Sumatra 11,192 cases.
Constant disagreements and quarrels were the leading cause of divorce in 2021, accounting for 279,205 cases nationally.
Other reasons for divorce included economic factors, desertion by one spouse, domestic violence, and polygamy.
