Food Insecurity Prevalence in Berau Reaches 7.86% in 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, reached 7.86% in 2023.

This figure is down 6.3% from the previous year's 14.16%, while it has increased by 0.73% over the past five years.

The average PoU in Indonesia was 8.53% in 2023. This means that the PoU in Berau Regency is lower than the national average.

According to the National Food Agency (Bapanas), PoU is a condition where a person regularly consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life. This indicator can be used as a tool to assess food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that the percentage of residents in Berau Regency who consume food but whose energy needs are insufficient does not reach 7.86% of the total population.

Compared to nine other regencies/cities in East Kalimantan Province, Berau Regency ranks third in terms of PoU. The area with the lowest PoU (top ranking) is Bontang City (6.95%), and the highest (bottom ranking) is Penajam Paser Utara Regency (16.34%).
