Elderly individuals are among the groups most at risk of death if infected with Covid-19. This risk is significantly higher if the elderly have not received any vaccination.
A study conducted by researchers from the Pandemic Team of the Faculty of Public Health (FKM), Universitas Indonesia (UI), found that the mortality risk for unvaccinated elderly Covid-19 patients was 9.3%. In contrast, the mortality risk for elderly Covid-19 patients who had received a booster vaccine was 0.4%.
"Elderly individuals who have never received a Covid-19 vaccine are 23 times more likely to die compared to those who have received a booster vaccine," according to the report.
The report also shows that the mortality risk for elderly Covid-19 patients who had received the first dose of the vaccine was 5.6%. Meanwhile, the mortality risk for elderly Covid-19 patients who had received the second dose was 4.2%.
The study also found that the Covid-19 mortality rate for those aged 60 and above (the elderly) reached 4%, the highest among all age groups. Therefore, Covid-19 vaccination, especially booster shots, is crucial for the elderly.
This study was conducted from January 1, 2022, to June 30, 2022, using the Ministry of Health's New All Record (NAR) application. Vaccination status was obtained from the Pcare system of the National Health Insurance Agency (BPJS Kesehatan).
Based on data merged using the National Identity Number (NIK), 1,792,360 Covid-19 cases were recorded. Of this number, 7,785 data points (0.4%) had age errors, and 1,107 data points (0.06%) were missing status information. The researchers involved in the study were Pandu Riono, Iwan Ariawan, Muhammad N. Farid, Hafizah Jusril, and Wiji Wahyuningsih.
