Indonesia's Covid-19 Cases Surge 23% in the Past Week

Indonesia recorded 48,816 Covid-19 cases from June 4-10, 2021. This represents a 23% increase compared to the previous week, which saw 39,627 cases.

This places Indonesia third in Asia with the highest number of additional Covid-19 cases in the past week. Indonesia is behind India and Iran, which recorded 700,909 and 58,012 additional cases respectively, over the past week.

However, the number of additional Covid-19 cases in India and Iran decreased in the last seven days. India saw a 32% decrease, while Iran saw a 16% decrease.

The increase in Covid-19 cases in Indonesia occurred after the Lebaran holiday. Indeed, on Thursday, June 10, 2021, there was an increase of 8,892 cases—the highest since the end of February 2021.

The impact of this increase is a dwindling hospital capacity due to the rising number of patients. One example is the Wisma Atlet Kemayoran Emergency Covid-19 Hospital, which housed 3,626 patients, or 60.4% of its bed capacity, as of yesterday.

To prevent the spread of Covid-19, the government urges the public to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. The public is also urged to reduce mobility and avoid crowds.
