This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, six countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while seven others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Iran (Islamic Republic), Singapore, India, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. A total of 50 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Thursday, January 26, 2023, representing weekly growth exceeding 33.33 percent.
Iran (Islamic Republic) recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 100 percent. Worldometer recorded 16 deaths in the country, a 23.08 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Singapore follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in the country grew by 100 percent, with two deaths reported. Daily death statistics show a 33.33% decrease compared to the previous day's three deaths.
Next, deaths in India increased by 66.67%, deaths in Lebanon increased by 40%, and deaths in Afghanistan increased by 33.33%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 2,528 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 15.08% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea recorded 213 deaths (down 31.73%), the Philippines recorded 93 deaths (down 27.34%), Indonesia recorded 39 deaths (down 23.53%), and Thailand recorded 31 deaths (down 32.61%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 3,003. This accounts for 34.5 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 8,705 deaths. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,608 deaths.
