Indonesia's tuberculosis (TB) incidence shows a downward trend over the last decade, as seen in the graph. TB incidence is an estimate of the number of new and recurrent TB cases arising in a given year.
This TB incidence calculation includes people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The TB incidence rate is expressed per 100,000 population.
According to World Bank data, Indonesia's TB incidence rate was 301 per 100,000 population in 2020. This is lower than in 2010, which reached 242 per 100,000 population. Despite the decrease, Indonesia's TB incidence rate remains high compared to other Southeast Asian countries.
According to the Ministry of Health's data, TB in Indonesia ranks third highest in the world after India and China. In Indonesia, there are 824,000 TB cases and 93,000 deaths per year, equivalent to 11 deaths per hour. To find and treat these cases, the Ministry of Health is conducting large-scale screenings this year.
The Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (P2PM) at the Ministry of Health, Dr. drh Didik Budijanto, stated that out of an estimated 824,000 TB patients in Indonesia, only 49% have been found and treated, leaving 500,000 untreated individuals at risk of becoming sources of transmission.
"Therefore, early case detection and complete treatment until recovery are crucial steps in interrupting TB transmission in the community," said Dr. Didik, as released on the sehatnegeriku website on Tuesday (March 22, 2022).
The Ministry of Health will screen for TB among the 500,000 undetected cases using X-Ray Artificial Intelligence equipment to provide faster and more efficient TB diagnosis results.
