Cigarettes have become a daily necessity for a portion of Indonesian society. Despite the almost annual price increase of cigarettes, cigarette consumption has not significantly decreased.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2021, the highest average expenditure on cigarettes and tobacco was recorded in Puncak Jaya Regency, at Rp78,460 per capita per week.
The next highest average consumption of cigarettes and tobacco was in Teluk Wondama Regency at Rp41,960 per capita per week, followed by Lanny Jaya Regency at Rp36,090 per capita per week.
This is followed by Belitung Timur Regency with an average consumption of Rp34,600 per capita per week; Nagan Raya Regency at Rp32,930 per capita per week; and Tambrauw Regency at Rp32,170 per capita per week.
Furthermore, Teluk Bintuni Regency recorded an average consumption of Rp31,780 per capita per week; Kepulauan Anambas Regency at Rp31,540 per capita per week; Karo Regency at Rp31,160 per capita per week; and Aceh Barat Regency at Rp30,780 per capita per week.
Of the 10 regions with the highest average consumption of cigarettes and tobacco last year, 5 are located in Tanah Papua (West Papua).
